Lecture Abstract:
The course based on Saadat Hasan Manto delves into his short story Toba Tek Singh, a poignant narrative set in the aftermath of the Partition of India in 1947. Manto, known for his unflinching portrayal of societal fissures, uses this story to explore the madness, absurdity, and trauma of forced displacement. At the heart of the narrative is Bishan Singh, a mentally ill man confined to a Lahore asylum, who is caught between two newly created nations, India and Pakistan, much like the borderland of Toba Tek Singh.
