Abstract:
The 6th century BCE is considered to be the age of religious revolution, not only in the Indian subcontinent but in other parts of the world also. In the Indian subcontinent, Jinism and Buddhism emerged as heterodox religious streams against the prevalent Brahmanism and in China teachings of Confucius and Lao became popular. Buddha’s discourses were compiled and grouped under the Pali canon after his death (mahaparinirvana) in three councils. Within the Pali Canon there are the Tripitakas of which the Dhammapada is a part. The lecture will be focusing on the Dhammapada as it is considered as the essence of teachings of the Buddha. It takes the form of ethical sayings and celebrates the essential principles of Buddhist philosophy and the Buddhist way of life. Dhammapada’s teachings are relevant to the humanity as a whole, making it a text of universal appeal, besides being a manual of Buddhist teachings.
